  3. Check power supply.
    1. Use this link to show you how to check the power supply for your computer.
  4. Check the RAM in your computer. You want to make sure it is DDR2/PC2.
    1. Use this link to show you how to remove the RAM, show you where to check the kind of RAM, and how to reinstall it correctly.
  5. Find the F Key for your computer, boot computer and log into the Bios. Fin the setting related to the TYPE of drive function. You are looking for AHCI or SATA. If your only options are Raid/IDE, select RAID.
    1. Use this link to help you find out which F Key should work for your computer.
  6. CHECK THE TIME AND DATE. Correcting the time and date at this step will give you a 30 day free trial of Windows to make sure that everything is working correctly, and will speed up installation of the software.
    1. Use this link to tell you how to change/check the date and time in the BIOs.
  7. Place your Windows disk into the DVD drive and reboot the computer. Some computers require you to access a Boot Menu or hit a key to boot from the DVD.
  8. You will be asked what version of Windows you would like to install. Check your COA for the version of Windows to install, most will be home premium or professional. The COA and the version of Windows need to be the same, or the license will not activate Windows. STARTER is only available in 32 Bit. The Bit rate does not matter to the license, as long as the version of Windows and the COA are the same. On Windows 95/98/2000/XP 16 bit programs will only work on 32 bit installs.
  9. On the next screen, select Install Windows.
  10. Then select CUSTOM install.
  11. Next screen will be the Drive Selection Menu. If you did not skip Step 2, it will show you only 1 drive labeled Unallocated space. Click Next. It will reboot itself, so be patient. Sometimes on 64 bit machines with lower quality mother boards, it can sit on 0% for what seems like forever.
    1. If you did not install a new hard drive, then DELETE ALL PARTITIANS. If you can not delete all the partitions, then replace the hard drive. Once you are down to one full, clean space, select it, and hit next. Use this link to look at our recommended hard drives.
  12. Once the computer has rebooted, it will ask for a username. ENTER ONE.
  13. Select your time zone.
  14. When it asks for product key, JUST HIT NEXT……if you did not skip Step 6 then you have 30 days to make sure everything is working correctly.
  15. Let windows do its initial scan of your hardware. Hopefully it loaded your network drivers.
    1. If not, our Drivers disk usually has the most common network drivers on it.
    2. Insert the Drivers DVD and Browse for drivers selecting your Drive and CHECK look at subfolders. Wired internet is easier than wireless.
  16. Once Windows boots for the first time, it will initialize the hard drive driver, and ask you to reboot. DO NOT SKIP the reboot, as it can corrupt your other driver loads later.
  17. Go to the start button, and type msconfig in the search box. Once it comes up, open msconfig.
    1. Go to the tab on the top of the page and click on Boot.
      1. Click the box for Advanced Option.
      2. Check the box for processors and move it to the highest number of processors. Click OK at the bottom of the screen.
      3. On the bottom right side of the screen, check the box that says MAKE ALL BOOT SETTINGS PERMANANT. Then hit Apply, then ok when the next screen pops up.
      4. Close the window. Right click on the computers home screen, go down and click on Personalize. It will pop up a window and on the right hand side at the bottom, click screen saver. Another screen will pop up. Towards the bottom there will be a link that says CHANGE POWER SETTINGS in blue. Click that. When the next screen comes up, click the dot and put the computer on HIGH PERFORMANCE mode. Then on the right, click Change Plan Settings, turn all the settings to NEVER until install is complete. You can always go back and change these settings later.
      5. Restart the computer.
  18. Download your motherboard drivers. Once downloaded, restart the computer.
